Relaxation Time: A Commentary on American Society

To quote Brooks from the movie The Shawshank Redemption, “The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry.” The sad thing is that he said that in reference to the way life was in 1950. The hurriedness of the world has only gotten worse, at the expense of the lay persons’ mental health. The average American works at least 46 hours a week, with nearly 40% of them working more than 50 hours a week. Once one adds in travel to and from work, household duties/responsibilities, children and their activities, and shopping there is very little time for one of the most important aspects of life, relaxation.

Relaxation time is basically not existent in today’s culture. Life is about productivity, business and multitasking. The problem is that when one asks those who have passed through the working part of their life and are looking forward to whatever lies ahead, they never say they wish they had worked more or done more or spent more time at the office. They almost always, without exception, say that they wish they would have spent more time with their family, working on relationships and relaxing and enjoying life. What kind of commentary is that on the misplaced priorities of cooperate America? It is true, the world has gotten itself in a big damn hurry, and someone must slow it down before it is too late.

In the typical American way of saying things, one person can make a difference. If just one person at a time would choose to take some relaxation time, it would begin a change reaction that cooperate America would not be able to ignore. Life happens but once, therefore it is imperative that society begin to take notice of the importance of family, friends and “down” time. It’s the preverbal stopping to smell the roses. Unless one stops to smell them, what use are they? Unless one stops and enjoys life, where’s the purpose?
